Has your vote ever counted?

make votes count

The election in 2001 was a travesty in that the Conservatives polled more English votes than Labour but Labour won? 48% more English seats – this is not democratic. The 2001 voter turnout was 59% - the lowest since 1918.

In the election of 2005 Labour had 3% more of the vote than the Conservatives which resulted in 28% more seats. The turnout was only 61.2% - 1.8% up on the 2001 low.

Is it not too much to ask and expect that the make up of the seats in parliament reflect the make up of the votes cast? This is obviously not happening. A real problem that voters have at present is that the election result hinges on 40 odd marginal seats. Very nice for the politicians to target and probably for the constituencies but certainly not representative of the whole country or any encouragement to vote outside of these areas.

DEMOCRACY – A system of government in which the citizens chose leaders or make other important decisions by voting.

To improve our democratic system we should have a list of questions for all candidates in order to garner an idea of what our representative stands for. This list should be between 50 and 100 questions of which the candidates must pick the most relevant/important 20. If this were adopted, the candidate voted according to his/her beliefs and all votes in parliament were truly free, then we would get nearer to a truly representative democracy.

The Current electoral system must be changed and to persuade more people to vote, each vote must count.

A fair system would be to elect a parliament that represented the views of all the voting electorate in proportion. This would be easy to achieve without changing the current constituencies or voting practices.

Quite simply the percentage total vote for each party would make up the parliamentary seats and the MP`s chosen by their percentage constituency vote.
